Does abstract art have meaning? why is it popular?

Abstract art is a term used to describe art that typically does not depict any specific subject or figure. The idea of abstract art was developed in the early-20th century and the term “abstract” has been in use since at least 1917, according to Oxford English Dictionary.

Abstract paintings are usually stylized with flat areas of color, lines and shapes instead of realistic images. Abstract Art is defined as an aesthetic quality or manner rather than a visual representation; it may be an aimless form which lacks originality or recognizability but still achieves beauty and moods because it expresses its emotions through universal description rather than interpretation. For this reason, many people enjoy exploring abstract painting without having any specific intentions for their own works.

The style of Abstract Expressionism was developed by artists working in New York during the 1940s and 1950s. Key members of this group were Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko.

Abstract art can be interpreted in many ways. Because it is often simplified to the point of unrecognizability, it is open to widely varied interpretations. However there are some themes that commonly occur across all works of abstract art:

Some people believe that abstract painting do not have meaning, but others think that it has some relationship with reality and emotional experience of the painter.

In the documentary “Abstract Art: An Extreme Close Up by David Hockney”, Hockney compares the formal properties of abstract painting with other types of visual communication:

The idea that abstract art is nonfigurative may be true for some artists and viewers, but it does not hold true for all. Both in the film and the book “David Hockney’s Bigger Picture” (2013), Hockney explains his own theory of how abstract art can evoke specific emotions and meaning. In his book, he says that “the more abstract an artwork is, the more figurative it is”. He uses many examples to prove his point. The following quotes illustrate his point:

The notion that abstract art does not have any meaning sparked controversy during the 20th century. However, some practitioners of abstract art believe that it is a powerful method of showing and expressing deep emotions, as well as a means of utilizing the artist’s universal creative imagination.

Despite the fact that abstract art may not have any meaning or representation, there are still many ways in which artists use it to express human emotions and thoughts. Abstract artist can be inspired by their own personal experiences, or they can paint what they see in nature. It has also been shown that abstract paintings can be used to express important ideas about life in general.
